Tucked away behind Moseley High Street, just south of Birmingham`s city centre is a private natural park - an untouched part of the inner city. A lake, surrounded by mature trees, two grassy meadows, paths, woodland and the odd bench to view it all from. It is a unique environment created at the turn of the century. There is a small angler`s club with; rumour has it a two-year waiting list and also a small lawn tennis club. Gillian Randle writes: I recently started work there as a ranger, joining my boss Christine Williams and fellow ranger John Lawlor. We help the groundsman Dave Brown to maintain the park. We also manage the park for its members. Membership of the Park is paid annually and this entitles you to a key to gain access via any of three gates. However it is a non-profit making LIMITED company that has to stay in the black or be lost. The developers seem to cast their beady eyes across its eleven valuable acres every now and then but it is fiercely protected from any takeover bids because of careful vetting by the Board of any share applications. We need to make sure this beautiful and unique park is protected for many years to come. There cannot be many industrial cities in Great Britain with heron, kingfisher and visiting woodpeckers ? not to mention the countless other woodland and water species just three and a half miles from it`s centre. We could do with some expert advice on how best to encourage new interest, learn more about our park and keep the peace and tranquillity that is so rare in a bustling city. You just would not know it was there!
